Overview

The four-day ICSOBA 2025 conference in Nanning concluded successfully on Friday, October 31, following field visits to the Guangxi Branch of Chinalco alumina refinery and to Guangxi Hualei New Material aluminium smelter.

This year’s conference breaks another all-time record, with 664 participants from around the world—602 attending onsite and 62 joining online.

We are particularly proud of the robust program offered, the high-quality conference facilities even though we experienced unexpected live streaming issues mainly caused by the internet local context.

For the next four weeks, a complete set of conference materials, including the TRAVAUX Book No. 54, presentations, recorded sessions, and sponsor and exhibitor documents, will remain accessible for registered participants on the Whova platform. As
always, all papers published in the TRAVAUX book are available on the ICSOBA website at https://icsoba.org/proceedings/

Once again, the forum underscored ICSOBA’s value as a unique platform for technological knowledge sharing within the industry.

Short Bio
This year’s ICSOBA Conference in Nanning, Guangxi, could not be more timely. Guangxi is endowed with rich bauxite resources and has established a complete and modern aluminium industrial chain. The city of Nanning is actively advancing its vision of becoming a “Green Aluminium Capital.” Through the ICSOBA platform, we look forward to in-depth dialogue and cooperation with our international colleagues – exploring new opportunities in low-carbon smelting, efficient resource utilization, and circular economy development. Together, we will drive the sustainable transformation of the global aluminium industry.
About ICSOBA Presidents

IAI BAC Meeting

The Bauxite & Alumina Committee (BAC) meeting was held by the International Aluminium Institute on Thursday October 30th in conjunction with the ICSOBA 2025 conference.

The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) is the only body representing the global primary aluminium industry. The IAI was established in 1972. Current IAI membership includes global bauxite, alumina and aluminium companies in all major producing regions. Please visit the IAI site for more details https://international-aluminium.org

International Forum on Comprehensive Utilization of Bauxite Residue

The International Forum on Comprehensive Utilization of Bauxite Residue is an international conference jointly organised by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA) and the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), with support from the Aluminum Corporation of China (CHINALCO) and Rio Tinto Group (RT).

The forum serves as an unparalleled platform for global knowledge exchange, bringing together world-leading experts, innovative practitioners, policy makers and industry leaders to foster collaboration and accelerate practical solutions. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage directly with pioneering research entities from both China – the global leader in bauxite residue innovation – and international counterparts who offer valuable insights and experiences from diverse geographical contexts. By attending, participants will play a crucial role in shaping international strategies and partnerships aimed at significantly reducing bauxite residue generation, enhancing sustainable remediation practices, unlocking commercial opportunities in construction and metal extraction, and ultimately driving the industry toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.

2025 Conference Satisfaction Survey

Our now traditional satisfaction survey was carried out in November following the Conference.

ICSOBA 2025 had nearly 700 participants from all around the world (47 countries represented) 602 attending onsite and 62 joining online as well as 25 exhibitors’ stands.

The feedback obtained from this survey is highly valuable to ICSOBA and we greatly appreciate the contribution made by the respondents.

The responses from the survey can be summarized as follows:

  • The global rating of the conference is very good (85%).
  • The rating of the quality of technical papers and keynotes remains very high, above 85%. However, we received comments pointing to being vigilant about papers and keynotes accepted for the conference.
  • We modified the structure of the program with 5 streams over 4 days. This has received mixed reviews. The overall ratings lean towards keeping the conference over 3 days with 5 streams only if required.
  • We modified overall time for each technical presentation, a change which has received an over 90% approval.
  • Hotel facilities were highly appreciated and allow for easy networking during the conference.
  • Exhibition was well appreciated this year with good stalls set up in prime location at the doors of the main conference room for the 25 exhibitors.
  • Social events were again appreciated (75 % positive). However, both the field trips received a very mixed rating, and participants point that their “contents” require further attention with the visited sites.
  • Whova platform was highly used mainly for agenda followed by participant’s list/search for, messages and photos and documents download. But not so much for the Q&A sessions this year.
  • We record that the use of ConfTool is now well understood by participants for registration and payment and that front desk registration was seen efficient.
  • 95 % of respondents will recommend attending ICSOBA conference.
  • We will stop the online part of the conference (i.e. the live broadcast during the conference). It was introduced in 2020, but attendance data do not support it.
  • Seen through the survey respondents, the conference attendance was tilted towards the smelter streams with a 66%/33% split.

We also received very useful feedback on suggestions and potential initiatives (respondents have provided over 200 comments) to further make ICSOBA “the technology conference of the aluminium industry for the aluminium industry”.

ICSOBA management will now take on board all these comments and suggestions to define ICSOBA 2026 and beyond conference’s content and format.

This gives us great confidence for the future. Thank you again for our contribution.
