Technical Field Trips

During the conference, technical field trips will be hosted by two subsidiaries of Hindalco, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers. Participants will have the unique opportunity to visit the following modern industrial facilities:

Belagavi Alumina Refinery +

Established in 1969 in Karnataka, western India, the Belagavi Alumina refinery has evolved from an integrated refinery and aluminium smelter complex into India's only large-scale 100% Specialty Alumina refinery. Following the discontinuation of smelting operations in 1992, the facility progressively transitioned from metallurgical grade alumina to non-metallurgical applications, completing this transformation after 2010. Today, it stands as a cornerstone of India's specialty alumina industry with an annual production capacity of 340 kt.

Operating an integrated Bayer-based process, the refinery manufactures over 120 grades of Specialty Alumina and Alumina Hydrates for diverse non-metallurgical applications, supported by in-house R&D and AI-enabled predictive quality and maintenance systems. Recognized globally as one of the lowest carbon alumina refineries thanks to biomass and 100% renewable power, the facility demonstrates stellar sustainability credentials including zero liquid discharge and full bauxite residue utilization. The refinery holds multiple certifications including ASI, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001, EcoVadis, and GreenCo, and was awarded the prestigious Apex Award – Sustainable Factory of the Year at the Frost & Sullivan IMEA Sustainability 4.0 Awards in 2025.

Location: Karnataka, Western India

Overview: India's only large-scale Specialty Alumina refinery, operational since 1969. Transitioned from metallurgical to 100% specialty alumina production after 2010.

Key Facts:

  • Annual production: 340 kt
  • Manufactures 120+ grades of Specialty Alumina and Alumina Hydrates
  • Among the world's lowest carbon alumina refineries (biomass + 100% renewable power)

Aditya Aluminium Smelter +

Commissioned in 2014 in Lapanga, Sambalpur, Odisha, the Aditya Aluminium facility represents a state-of-the-art smelter-power plant complex that produces the highest quality aluminium (P0202) in the Indian subcontinent. Built on advanced Rio-Tinto Aluminium AP 36 technology, the smelter currently operates at 374 kt capacity, exceeding its rated capacity of 360 kt per year. The facility comprises a potline with 360 electrolytic cells, a cast house, and an anode plant, demonstrating exceptional operational efficiency.

Through innovative in-house initiatives in lining and collector bar design, the plant has achieved industry-leading DC energy consumption of less than 13.2 kWh/kg. The smelter is powered by its own 900 MW coal-based thermal captive power plant, complemented by a 30 MW solar power plant. As part of ongoing sustainability initiatives, Aditya Smelter has collaborated with renewable energy companies to source 100 MW RTC RE energy, while capacity enhancement is underway through the addition of another full pot line utilizing AP 36 Technology.
