Invitation and General Information

Dear Colleagues,

The International Committee for Study of Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium (ICSOBA) has the great honour to announce the 40th International Conference and Exhibition of ICSOBA, that will take place from 10 to 14 October 2022.

This will be the second time ICSOBA will take place in Athens and the third time in Greece.

The conference is planned to allow hybrid audience, with the in-person part to be held in Athens, Greece and the online part as real-time broadcasting for the delegates that cannot attend in-person. However, all ICSOBA presenters will travel to Athens to deliver their presentation physically.

We are monitoring the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Greece and globally as well as the geopolitical context and may adjust the event format accordingly.

We look forward to see you all at ICSOBA-2022!

Most of the essential details about the event can be found in the 2nd Circular:

ICSOBA, in its vision and commitment to cooperate with other conferences and better serve the aluminium industry, is also happy to join forces with the:

  • 4th International Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference (BR2022). BR2022 will be only virtual, as information will be shared on the upscaling installations, ideally real-time also.
  • Final RemovAL Cross-Fertilisation Workshop. It will take place as an in-person and freely accessible event, which will present the innovative bauxite residue processing routes from RemovAL and other relevant EU project aspiring to foster synergies and turn bauxite residue into a resource.
  • Bauxite & Alumina Committee meeting and Workshop on decarbonisation in refining will be organised by International Aluminium Institute (IAI) side by side with ICSOBA 2022.
  •

Conference topics

ICSOBA 2022 will explore the following key issues:

  • Global bauxite deposits
  • Bauxite mining
  • Alumina refining
  • Bauxite Residue valorisation
  • Carbon electrodes in aluminium electrolysis
  • Primary aluminium
  • New technologies
  • Greenfield and Brownfield activities
  • Success stories in projects implementation
  • Health, environment and safety
  • Market scenarios and economic outlook.

Primary focus is on sustainable development and reducing carbon footprint.

Do not miss the opportunity to interact with international experts, scientists, engineers, technology suppliers, equipment manufacturers and representatives of worldwide aluminium industry.

Conference Format

The hybrid format of the conference will enable your participation irrespectively if you travel to Athens or have to stay at home. The difference between on-site and online participation is:

  • On-site participants of the conference will be able to take full benefit of regular ICSOBA conference, including downloading the papers and presentations before the opening of the conference, participation in technical sessions, exhibition, field trips and social functions. Only on-site speakers will have the opportunity to present a paper. On-site participant will also be able to watch the recorded presentations “on demand” on the conference platform.
  • Online participants of the hybrid conference will be able to download the papers and presentations before the opening of the conference. They will be able to attend the presentations live in the scheduled sessions Athens time as well as viewing the recorded presentations “on demand” on the conference platform.

Publication of ICSOBA papers in Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy

In addition to publication in regular conference proceedings, all ICSOBA authors will be invited to submit their manuscripts to a topical collection in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy (JSM): https://www.springer.com/journal/40831 dedicated to publishing the high-quality ICSOBA papers. With a 2020 impact factor of 2.35, JSM ensures high visibility for the research results presented at ICSOBA. Only the papers meeting the journal scope will be considered for peer review and publication. The publication in this journal will be free to authors unless they choose to publish Open Access: https://www.springernature.com/gp/open-research/policies/journal-policies/.

Journal scopes are given further as a guideline for authors willing to prepare their manuscript accordingly.

Journal Aims and Scope:

Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to presenting metallurgical processes and related research aimed at improving the sustainability of metal-producing industries, with a particular emphasis on materials recovery, reuse, and recycling. Its editorial scope encompasses new techniques, as well as optimization of existing processes, including utilization, treatment, and management of metallurgically generated residues. Articles on non-technical barriers and drivers that can affect sustainability will also be considered.

The journal aspires to contribute to advancing the science but also to be a catalyst for tangible change toward more sustainable practices in the metallurgical industrial sector.

Special focus on Bauxite Residue valorisation in association with redmud.org

The 4th International Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference will focus on the efforts that have already successfully reached high technological readiness. There is provision for maximum 12 presentations, with a particular format: 20 min dedicated on slides, 20 min on live or recorded presentation of the pilot plant scale installation and 20 min for questions. We believe that by doing so, we bring the community closer together and we accelerate the big-scale use and application of bauxite residue.

On-site participants of ICSOBA conference in Athens will have opportunity to watch to the BR2022 in main hall of the conference venue.

To access the conference materials and to participate online, you should register for BR2022 at their website

For more information, please visit https://conference2022.redmud.org/.

Final RemovAL Cross-Fertilisation Workshop

The final RemovAL Cross-Fertilisation Workshop, organized by European Aluminium, will take place on 10 October as a freely accessible hybrid event.

RemovAL is an EU H2020 project which aims to valorise bauxite residue, spent pot lining and other waste through new innovative processing routes. This final event will mainly focus on presenting how to turn bauxite residue and other aluminium industrial residues into valuable resources. In this context, non-technological enablers, cross-fertilisation opportunities between EU projects and industry, and other aspects (policy, societal) will be discussed for boosting the sustainability and circularity of alumina refineries.

For more information and registration, please visit https://european-aluminium.eu/resource-hub/removal-cross-fertilisation-conference/.

Sponsorship Opportunities

As conference organizers, we try to continuously innovate to contribute to a better technical knowledge sharing within the industry. As an example, this year we are introducing live streaming of the conference from a single platform – Whova – enabling interaction between on-site and virtual participants.

As you well know, organizing such conference would simply not be possible without the strong support of our Conference Sponsors.

You will find the Sponsors Fees and Benefit table which illustrates the different options both for on-site benefit but also through the Whova application, which will be used both by the on-site and the online delegates. Two positions are available for Diamond Sponsors and three for Gold Sponsors. There is no number limitation for Silver and Bronze categories.

Should you be interested to showcase your Company at ICSOBA 2022, feel free to contact claude.vanvoren@icsoba.org for any further information. It will be our pleasure to manage Company registration in ICSOBA Conference Management System Conftool.
